The Morrie Evans Wing (MEW) is a Commonwealth-funded residential aged care facility which was officially opened on 11th June 1978 by Dr Wilder, Chairman of the Hospital and Charities Commission. Also on this day Mr T.C. Trewin (MLA) announced the name of the building – the Morrie Evans Nursing Home in honour of Morris Evans (MBE). Mr Evans was heavily involved in the establishment of the Benalla and District Memorial Hospital. He was a strong community advocate and proudly served his community over a 35 year period, commencing on the 14th November 1944 and finishing on the 29th November 1979 when he resigned his position as President of the Board of Management.
Our 30 bed residential aged care facility has a bed configuration consisting of:
• Four single rooms (two with ensuites)
• 13 rooms with two beds (12 with private ensuite)
Benalla Health recently completed significant renovations to improve and modernise the facilities. This includes updating the wards and building new ensuite bathrooms for most of the rooms.
Morrie Evans Wing is situated on the Benalla Health campus and comes under the governance of the Benalla Health Board of Management.
Our caring approach
Morrie Evans Wing is a special place where compassion and personalised care is a feature. We are proud to be a leading provider of residential aged care in North East Victoria.
Our home is suitable for looking after residents with high care health needs and persons living with dementia. Our residents’ needs have been kept in the forefront of our minds during recent renovations , with the result being a more comfortable and modern setting. Staff provide an exemplary standard of permanent and respite care to residents and their families. Low care respite care can also be provided.
The home is surrounded by beautiful gardens and it has two covered patio areas for enjoying the outdoors, including BBQ facilities. Activities are regularly held for the enjoyment of all residents. The main entrance is situated off Samaria Rd.
Morrie Evans Wing has been providing an excellent standard of care to residents of Benalla and surrounding areas for more than 30 years. We have a proud history with humble beginnings built on the generosity of local people and the ongoing tireless efforts of the fundraising committee and the Benalla Health Board of Management. Recent works to improve amenities have enhanced residents’ privacy and dignity. These amenities include creating more intimate spaces as well as the addition of ensuites.

Residents’ needs are met through our fully trained registered and enrolled nurses, who practice person-centred care.
We also operate in partnership with doctors, allied health practitioners and pharmacists, who regularly review residents to ensure their current health needs are being met.
Our model of care promotes social interaction to ensure that residents can continue to live in a stimulating, family friendly environment. We recognise individuals, their wishes, choices and pursuits. We assist residents to maintain their independence, before stepping in to help in a supportive way. We respect different cultural and spiritual needs and assist residents to continue accessing these important personal choices.
Our lifestyle program is tailored to meet both the needs of the individual residents as well as their friends and family. The program is coordinated by an accredited diversional therapist and supported by volunteers and lifestyle staff.
