BreastScreen van visiting
From 13 to 31 August, local women over the age of 40 can get free breast screens—the best way to detect cancer early and save lives.
BreastScreen Victoria’s bright pink Mobile Screening Service van, known as ‘Marjorie’ is coming to Benalla for the first time to provide free breast screens to local women.
For over fifteen years, Benalla Health has been running a two-monthly ‘Boob Bus’, ferrying women to BreastScreen Victoria’s Shepparton Clinic.
“We’re so pleased that the actual Boob Bus—so to speak—is making its way to Benalla for the first time,” said Deborah Smith, Community Health Nurse from Benalla Health.
Ms Smith has been running the Boob Bus since 2006. As well as life-saving breast screens, she says the bus has provided opportunities for women to support one another, access important health information and socialise. It’s also supported many women with disabilities to access breast screening—who would’ve otherwise found it difficult to.
Marjorie’s visit will give local women a more convenient, close to home option. BreastScreen Victoria CEO Vicki Pridmore is encouraging women aged 50 to 74 from Benalla and surrounds to take advantage of the van’s visit to town.
“Bringing the van to Benalla will make it easier for all women to screen. We’d like to get more women than ever in the area to have a breast screen,” Ms Pridmore said.
“Women will be well looked after by our experienced, senior radiographers and the vans use the highest quality digital radiography machines to ensure that women receive the best service, regardless of their location.”
Women aged between 50 and 74 benefit the most from regular breast screens—which are the best way of finding cancer early, before any symptoms are noticeable and when treatment is most successful.
The van is located at Sir Weary Dunlop Learning Centre (library), 2 Fawckner Drive, Benalla from 13 August to 31 August 2018.
Mammograms with BreastScreen Victoria are free, take 10 minutes and are with a woman. Appointments for the Mobile Screening Service visit to Benalla can be made online at breastscreen.org.au or by calling 13 20 50.
