An online portal, Connect~Benalla (connectbenalla.org.au), is the result of community feedback on how to best improve knowledge and access to mental health resources and support services.

It was one outcome of a round table held in Benalla earlier this year which aimed to find solutions to stop recent concerning trends of people taking their own lives in the district, which has been accompanied by rises in the number of people suffering mental illness in the community.

The community round table had clearly indicated that people wanted more awareness about the resources which were available to them, both immediately and in the longer term.

Benalla does have a range of services available to those who are suffering mental health issues, or who are considering self-harm, but the awareness of the resources was a significant gap which needed addressing.

A group of people, including Council representatives, Benalla Health, medical professionals and those from a range of different agencies, have been working hard on making sure that people know where to get help when they most need it.

As well as the online portal, the group has also produced information cards and magnets which can be a ready resource for those who find themselves in a situation where they need assistance, as well as their families, who are often at a loss to know what to do.

On the home page, there is a telephone number for assistance, as well as a linked button to crisis care providers and another linked button with a full range of services for non-emergency cases.
