Benalla Health Clinical Educator Stephanie Johnson said that as a collaborative, graduate nurses were interviewed and a coordinated graduate program, which includes interhospital rotations and a professional development program, are conducted.
“This year, instead of the interview process being conducted over seven days, applicants were interviewed over one day using some innovative measures to ensure the process brought better outcomes for all involved,” she said.
“The new process included three stations – medication calculations and medication errors; group scenario and individual questions – which the applicants rotated through.
“The individual interviews were done like speed dating where each applicant was interviewed one on one by their interviewer.”
Mrs Johnson said each two-hour time slot had capacity to interview 27 applicants which brought the day’s total to 81 applicants.
“This was a very effective and resource efficient way to conduct the interviews as we were able to use senior nursing staff, nurse unit managers, a human resources team member and the Deputy Director of Clinical Services,” she said.
“We also had one of our 2016 Graduate Nurses on the interview and she was available for all prospective grads to ask any questions if they liked.
“The evaluations from the day were mainly positive from all of the applicants and interviewers and we will make a few tweaks to ensure it continues to be a good process.
“The next step in the process is to input all of our rankings into Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria and then next month our matches will be released and each organisation will find out what graduate nurses they will be employing.”
