Available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients & families who are accessing services at Benalla Health.
What does an Aboriginal Patient & Family Support Officer do?

Assist community members to feel safe when accessing health care, by providing support with a holistic approach, cultural understanding and awareness.

Reach out to patients, families and community members to offer further support and advocate on their behalf, and assist with any barriers.

Work with non-Aboriginal clinicians to help increase their cultural capacity and awareness when working with Aboriginal Patients.

Provide guidance and support by linking patients and families to external and internal support agencies, E.g. VACCA programs, education, KESO-Koori Engagement Officer.

Build connections and empower Aboriginal Community members on their health journey.

Provide social support. Eg. Transport & shopping.

Discharge planning.
