Having a Baby

You’ve found out you are pregnant. What do you do now?

Firstly, congratulations on your pregnancy! This is such a special time, and while it can bring moments of excitement, it’s also completely natural to feel a little overwhelmed. At Benalla Health, our maternity team is here to support and guide you every step of the way. We offer comprehensive care throughout your journey, including all your pre and postnatal visits, breastfeeding support services, and close collaboration with surrounding health providers. Our goal is to ensure you receive the highest quality care while staying as close to home as possible. Depending on your preferences, you’ll be supported to birth at GV Health’s Shepparton campus, Northeast Health Wangaratta, or another birthing service of your choice.

As soon as you think you might be pregnant, it’s important to book an appointment with your local General Practitioner (GP) or self-refer to our free GP Obstetrician service via the below enquiry form.

Following confirmation of your pregnancy, the GP or GP Obstetrician will collect a detailed medical history and arrange essential early pregnancy tests, including an antenatal screening, a dating scan, and a 12-week ultrasound.

Once these assessments are complete and the results are available, the GP or GP Obstetrician can send a referral to Benalla Health Maternity Services or the healthcare provider of your choice to commence maternity care.

If your pregnancy is considered low risk, you will have an option to receive collaborative midwife led care or collaborative GP shared care at Benalla Health. If during pregnancy, there are complications or risks, you may choose to have appointments with a  Specialist Obstetrician from GV Health, at our Benalla clinic, or be referred to Northeast Health Wangaratta.  A care plan will guide your journey and appointments every step of the way.

My referral has been sent to Benalla Health, what happens next?

When a referral is received, one of our friendly midwives will contact you to organise a Booking In appointment for an initial assessment and discussion regarding your pregnancy pathway.

This usually takes place between 12-16 weeks either via phone or via the Benalla Health Antenatal Clinics located on site at Benalla Health.
